The shops in the City of Markham[
Welcome to Markham! With its well-planned family neighbourhoods, world-class recreation, schools, theatre, shopping, and proximity to all of York Region and Toronto, Markham is now one of the GTA’s most sought-after locations.
The City of Markham still remembers and celebrates its’ roots as a farming town, and the community still hosts the annual Markham Fair where local farmers showcase their crops and livestock. There’s no better way to become educated about the rich rural history in Markham and the bounty of Ontario produce than to visit the Fair. Many families from all over Southern Ontario make it their fall tradition to attend.
Markham is a small town that has grown into a large city filled with old traditions and new excitement. There are so many things to enjoy here, everything from restaurants and malls, to outdoor recreation and community centres.
There are two main and very popular malls in Markham. Markville Mall just recently did renovations worth millions of dollars and since then, all of the popular stores have opened. Down the road from Markville, you will find another large mall called Pacific Mall. This is known as an Asian mall where you can find all the products and foods imported from overseas.
Aside from the shopping, Markham has many delicious restaurants. The choices are endless, from traditional pub grub, Italian, Japanese, and everything else you could imagine! Recently, when Markville Mall did renovations, a popular restaurant, Joey’s, opened up and now that is the go-to place for a family dinner, date night and even for a night out with friends! You can find gourmet coffee shops and ice cream places at almost every corner and you won’t be let down by the variety of grocery stores close by.
There are so many fun activities for kids and families to enjoy in Markham, community centres such as Markham Village, Cornell Community Centre and Mount Joy are found all over the city. These centres are filled up with camps, fitness programs and reading programs . The City of Markham now has two libraries, Markham Village Library and Cornell Library, these also run educational programs for kids of all ages. The schools in Markham have been known to provide a good education to children; The York Region School Boards have supported Markham schools in many ways. Franklin Public School is located in old Markham, and is actually a French Immersion school. Seneca College opened a campus in Markham that offers many of the same programs as the larger campuses do. This draws the attention of adults looking to go back to school part time.
There are countless parks all over the city. Check out Reeve Park, William Armstrong Park and The Conservation Area, as many of them have playgrounds and others are just a place to hang out! Cornell Village, within Markham, sets up an outdoor skating rink every winter where the locals spend the day skating and playing hockey with friends.
The Markham Museum showcases the history of Markham, and the people who originally settled and it’s a great place to bring the kids. They hold regular tours for kids and adults; they even have a summer camp.
Something unique about Markham that sometimes gets overlooked is that it has its very own, small airport. Buttonville Airport is located right off the highway and although large planes don’t fly out of here, you will find that they have a ‘Learn to Fly’ program that some people do, just for fun!
Over the years Markham has grown from a small farming town to a large and highly functioning city! There is a downtown Markham area, filled with new condo buildings and The Markham Theatre, but there are still parks where you can spend time to get away from it all. It’s safe to say that you will get the best of both worlds in a city like Markham!
